Dan Orlovsky Breaks Down Whether Kyler Murray Fits in Kevin O'Connell’s Offense

The Vikings turned to Kyler Murray after last season’s quarterback struggles, but questions linger about how the move fits Kevin O’Connell’s long-term vision.

The Minnesota Vikings had a quarterback problem last season and everyone knew it. The offense sputtered, the position room lacked stability and heading into the offseason Kevin O'Connell had one clear priority. Fix it.

The first answer came from an unlikely place. Kyler Murray was cut loose by the Arizona Cardinals and landed in Minnesota on a one-year league-minimum deal. It was the kind of low-risk signing that makes sense on paper.

Murray spent seven seasons in Arizona throwing for 20,460 yards and 121 touchdowns. He's a two-time Pro Bowler and a former Offensive Rookie of the Year. The resume is real but the question is whether any of it translates cleanly into what O'Connell is actually building.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky has his doubts and he's been pretty straightforward about them on a recent segment of "Get Up."

"I think the reality for Minnesota with Kevin O'Connell and Kyler Murray is, you're taking a very unique player and trying to fit him into a very specific scheme," Orlovsky said. "Kyler is this dynamic athlete and very good thrower of the football. He's had moments when he's played MVP style of quarterback. But that's not necessarily the type of player that we've seen, at least right now, thrive in these offenses."

The concern is not about Murray's talent and Orlovsky isn't dismissing him. The issue is fit. Minnesota runs one of the league's heaviest play-action systems and leans into under-center looks more than most teams.

Murray rarely worked out of that setup in Arizona doing it only a handful of times per game. There's just not much evidence yet that he can make that shift cleanly and that's the hesitation Orlovsky is pointing to.

That said there's a legitimate case for why Vikings fans should be excited. Since entering the league in 2019 only Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts have rushed for more yards among quarterbacks. That kind of mobility is something O'Connell has never really had at his disposal.

His previous starters Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold were pocket passers. Murray is a different animal entirely and that dimension alone could open things up.

No official announcement has been made but Murray is widely expected to be the starter. Still the competition in that room is worth watching. J.J. McCarthy is 23 years old and heads into a big offseason after a difficult 2025.

The Vikings also brought back Carson Wentz who started five games last year before a shoulder injury ended his run early. Minnesota knows the value of depth at that position better than most after what they went through.
