No program in the NCAA Tournament is arguably having a better run than UConn this year. From Braylon Mullins’ buzzer-beater to Dan Hurley’s wild celebrations, the Huskies appear full of confidence as they chase their seventh national championship. But amid the good times, the team is also preparing to say goodbye to a long-time member of the coaching staff. Judging by Hurley’s reaction, the farewell was nothing short of heartfelt.
Luke Murray joined UConn in 2021 as an assistant coach under Hurley. However, this wasn’t the first time the two had worked together. Murray previously served on Hurley’s staff at both Wagner and Rhode Island. Now, the long-time assistant has taken the next step in his career, becoming the head coach of the Boston College Eagles men’s basketball.
During his introductory press conference, Murray shared details about how he informed Hurley of his decision. He revealed that he had made up his mind before UConn’s Sweet 16 matchup against Michigan State. According to Murray, Hurley approached him at the lunch table and asked, “Alright Lukey, what is it?”
The assistant coach responded, “Alright, I’m going.” Hurley reacted with a heartwarming hug, a moment that spoke volumes about the relationship between the two coaches. Hurley has long been an advocate for Murray’s abilities and has often supported his pursuit of a head coaching role.
While the UConn coach will certainly miss his trusted assistant, the two still have one more opportunity to share the sideline together. Murray revealed that he will remain with the Huskies through the remainder of March Madness.
The incoming Boston College head coach also reiterated his desire to help UConn capture a third national championship in Indianapolis this week. For now, Hurley still has the company he values most with just two games left in the tournament.
