For a program built on toughness and composure, the final moments of UConn’s season told a very different story. Dan Hurley, who never hides his emotions, made it clear just how emotionally difficult the loss had been for him.
Despite failing to secure the Big East regular-season title or the tournament championship, UConn still managed to reach the national championship game. The path was challenging, especially following a disappointing NCAA tournament run last year. That context makes this loss feel even heavier.
During the post-game press conference, Hurley admitted that he had been sobbing since the final whistle. “I did most of my crying on the way over here,” Hurley said. “I had my sunglasses on the bus. I walked in because I cried, and I cried when I walked through the hotel and was emotional.” However, the tears in his eyes weren’t solely because of UConn’s loss.
Instead, they reflected his pride in his players. Hurley added, “You’re so proud of your team.” He elaborated on how he felt sad about defeating everyone except the “formidable opponent” Michigan. The Huskies battled throughout the game but ultimately fell to the Wolverines, 69-63.
The win would have given UConn its third national championship in three years. But Hurley will have to wait for a third ring. With his sights now set on a possible NBA future, it remains unclear how much longer UConn will have to chase another title.
