In March, the focus for most college basketball coaches remains on chasing the ultimate prize which is the national championship. However, for some coaches like Dan Hurley, distractions can arrive at the worst possible time. This week brought one of those moments for the UConn head coach.
As the Huskies were preparing to face Tom Izzo’s Michigan State in the Sweet 16, Hurley and his staff had to say goodbye to one of their veteran coaches. Luke Murray, who has served as Hurley’s assistant since 2021, decided to become Boston College’s next head coach.
Following Murray’s decision, Hurley shared his honest thoughts on X. “BC is Back! This guy is the best,” he wrote. The 53-year-old further added how much he would miss his assistant as he departs for Chestnut Hill. “Will miss him greatly but so proud and happy for him. Long overdue opportunity. Good Bye Champ!!”
Murray’s coaching move did not come as a surprise. Hurley has been actively advocating for his assistant to land a head coaching position across college basketball. However, the timing also adds another layer to the story. With UConn locked into the intensity of March Madness, such news could easily become a distraction.
But Hurley and the Huskies have overcome plenty of adversity before. The biggest challenge for Hurley will be losing a trusted assistant coach who has played an important role in the program’s recent success.
Still, seeing Murray take the next step in his career is something Hurley has been pushing for all along. The farewell feels less like an ending and more like the beginning of a new chapter.
