The men’s 2026 T20 World Cup is entering a pivotal stage as the Super Eight matches are set to begin Saturday, starting with a clash between Pakistan and New Zealand. However, the familiar voice of South African cricket legend Dale Steyn will be absent from the broadcasting booth after the former fast bowler was forced to return home early for surgery.
Although Steyn has long retired from international cricket, he continues to play in Legends League Cricket. It was during that competition that he tore his pectoral muscle off the tendon. The injury had been troubling the 42-year-old, prompting him to announce his early withdrawal from the tournament on Tuesday.
Steyn has since undergone successful surgery but joked that he may not fully adhere to his doctor’s recovery instructions.
"Quick update. Surgery went well, Doc said no fun things for 4 months… We all know that ain’t gana happen! 😂. So it’s a new injury, tore my pec off the tendon and needed it reattached, just reminding myself further why not to play old man cricket leagues. Thanks for the messages of support! Always appreciated 👊🤙👊," he wrote on X.
Steyn represents the Maharashtra Tycoons in Legends League Cricket, which is scheduled for a blockbuster six-city tour across India from March 6–25. However, following surgery, Steyn is unlikely to participate.
Meanwhile, South Africa has impressed in the opening phase of the T20 World Cup, finishing the group stage unbeaten with wins over New Zealand and Afghanistan. The team's toughest challenge awaits in the Super Eight, where it will face defending champion India on Sunday.
South Africa is placed in Group 1 alongside India and remains well positioned to reach the semifinals if it secures victories against Zimbabwe and the West Indies. A win over India on Sunday would make its path to the knockout stage much easier.
