Dabo Swinney must quickly silence the scrutiny after a disastrous start to the 2026 season.
Clemson opened the year by getting annihilated in a 51-10 rout to LSU on Saturday. The worst loss of Swinney’s tenure sparked questions about whether the two-time national champion belongs on the hot seat.
Swinney isn’t giving up after the massive season-opening setback. He responded to the rough defeat on his weekly radio show, per The Post and Courier’s Jackson Castellano.
“I just think it’s a terrible mindset to have,” Swinney said. “We’re not going to go undefeated every year. How many times has that happened in the history of 130 years? And in today’s college football, there’s not going to be many teams that, somewhere, don’t have a loss or have a bad day.
“… We work all year for 12 days, and that’s a bad day. And so you pick yourself up, and you get back in the fight and you learn. Let’s go get better next week.”

Swinney acknowledged how horribly Saturday went for Clemson, which was thoroughly outplayed in Baton Rouge. The ACC program mustered 145 total yards with one third-down conversion while allowing 644 yards to LSU in Lane Kiffin’s debut.
“Certainly not the start we wanted or worked for, or honestly deserved. But we got what we earned,” Swinney said. “… A lot of unknowns going into the game, but just didn’t do what we needed to do.”
The blowout raises significant questions about Clemson. A perennial title contender for much of Swinney’s 18-year run could be in danger of another precipitous fall following a 7-6 campaign.
Swinney wants to quickly turn the page and focus on Clemson’s next challenge. The Tigers can rebound in another non-conference game against Georgia Southern this Saturday before hosting the UNC Tar Heels on Sept. 19.
“We got 11 more game days, and that one is gone. Nothing we can do about that. Woke up this morning, and hey, the good Lord gave us another day to go chase greatness, and that’s what we’re gonna do.”
