The Kansas City Chiefs received encouraging news Monday after a pair of wide receivers were forced to miss time during training camp. Rookie Cyrus Allen, who has emerged as one of the early surprises of camp, was sidelined after suffering a shin bruise, creating concern about his availability as he competes for a role in the Chiefs' deep receiving corps.
However, head coach Andy Reid quickly eased those worries, providing an optimistic timeline for Allen's return. Reid also offered an update on former first-round pick Xavier Worthy, whose shoulder injury had also drawn attention. With preseason action approaching and roster battles beginning to intensify, the Chiefs appear to have avoided a more serious setback involving two receivers they hope can contribute during the 2026 season.
Andy Reid Provides Positive Cyrus Allen Injury Update
According to Chiefs reporter Matt Derrick, Reid said both Allen and Worthy are expected to return soon.
"Andy Reid reports WR Xavier Worthy (shoulder sprain) and WR Cyrus Allen (shin bruise) need 'a day or two' before they will be back," Derrick posted on X. "DE Ashton Gillotte (hamstring) also remains out."
The update suggests Allen avoided a significant injury after leaving practice, with the rookie expected to resume participating later this week.
That's welcome news for Kansas City after Allen generated considerable buzz during the opening days of training camp.
Rookie Receiver Has Turned Heads Early
Allen entered the NFL after the Chiefs selected him in the fifth round of the 2026 NFL Draft out of Cincinnati. Although he arrived without the fanfare of some of Kansas City's other offensive weapons, Allen has reportedly impressed throughout camp with his route running and chemistry with the quarterbacks.
His emergence has added another intriguing option to a receiver room that already includes Worthy, Rashee Rice, Jalen Royals and veteran depth pieces competing for roster spots The Chiefs will likely continue taking a cautious approach with Allen over the next couple of days, especially with Reid making it clear the injury is considered minor.
Just as importantly for Kansas City, Worthy's shoulder sprain also appears unlikely to keep him sidelined for an extended period.
With Reid projecting both receivers to return within "a day or two," the Chiefs appear to have avoided what could have been a much more significant injury scare during training camp. That allows the coaching staff to keep evaluating one of the league's most intriguing young receiving groups as preparations continue for another season with Patrick Mahomes leading the offense.
