The Chicago Cubs activated right-hander Edward Cabrera from the 15-day injured list Sunday, creating a new role for David Peterson in the club’s pitching plans.
Cabrera is scheduled to start against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field after missing time with a left hamstring strain. Rather than sending a pitcher to Triple-A Iowa, the Cubs are keeping their depth at the Major League level.
The move gives Chicago another established arm as it continues to chase the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central. The Cubs entered Sunday 72-52, 4 games behind Milwaukee.
Cabrera has a 5-4 record with a 5.10 ERA in 14 starts this season. He has thrown 72 1/3 innings with 65 strikeouts and a 1.40 WHIP.
David Peterson, meanwhile, will transition from the starting rotation into a multi-inning relief role. The Cubs can use the left-hander as a long man while carefully managing Cabrera's workload in his first start back.
Peterson has gone 4-1 with a 4.19 ERA in eight starts since joining Chicago from the New York Mets on June 25. He has thrown 43 innings with 31 strikeouts and a 1.37 WHIP during that stretch.

Cabrera’s return comes with plenty to prove after his 5.10 ERA before the injury. His return could provide Chicago with another rotation option, even if his numbers have been uneven.
For Peterson, the move represents a notable change despite his solid production since joining the Cubs. His ability to work multiple innings gives Chicago another flexible option as the team manages its pitching staff during the postseason push.
