Just five days after a foul ball fractured the left side of his face, Chicago Cubs star Alex Bregman is back in the lineup.
Bregman wore the brutal collision on Sunday during a game at Cincinnati and was immediately removed from the game and transported to the hospital, where it was revealed that he had suffered multiple facial fractures. Still, he remained hopeful that surgery was not needed and he would return to the Cubs at some point in the postseason.
Well, it looks like fans won’t have to wait around until next week to see him back in there, as Bregman is penciled in as the DH hitting out of the three-hole for the first game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park. It will be Bregman’s first time playing his former team since the Red Sox let him walk in free agency over the offseason.
Judging by Bregman’s face, which remains marred by swelling and bruising, it is a shock that he able to return so soon. But the veteran infielder clearly made it a goal to see some at-bats before postseason play kicked off. On top of that, the Cubs are still in a push for home field advantage for the Wild Card series, sitting one game back of the San Diego Padres with three games left to play.
Getting these games in may be a challenge for Chicago and Boston, who are still exploring options for how to proceed beyond Friday’s doubleheader with a nor’easter storm expected to crush the area beginning on Friday night. As of now, the teams are scheduled to play at 1:05 pm EST and 5:35 pm EST on Friday and 7:15 pm EST on Saturday, but the possibility of a neutral site on Saturday or Sunday (likely Tampa Bay) remains in play for Game 162.
Whenever it may be, Chicago’s chances of overtaking the Padres to claim home field are better with Bregman in there, as the 32-year-old has once again put together a strong season capped off by a scorching August and September where he posted a 1.025 OPS and a .968 OPS, respectively.
