Cubs Strengthen Rotation With Veteran Starter
Gausman joins Chicago after making 23 starts for the Blue Jays this season.
The veteran right-hander owns a 5-10 record with a 4.38 ERA across 127.1 innings while striking out 127 batters. Although Toronto struggled throughout much of the season, Gausman quietly pitched better in recent weeks.
His final outing with the Blue Jays came Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals, when he earned the victory after allowing just one earned run over 5.2 innings. Despite giving up nine hits, Gausman limited the damage, walked only one batter and struck out four to help Toronto secure a 5-1 win.
It now appears that performance served as his final start in a Blue Jays uniform before heading to Chicago.
Cubs Add Proven Experience for Stretch Run
The Cubs were projected to be among the most aggressive contenders as the trade deadline approaches, and adding Gausman gives them another experienced option for the rotation.
Across his major league career, Gausman has logged more than 2,000 innings while recording over 2,080 strikeouts. His splitter has long been regarded as one of the game's most effective swing-and-miss pitches, and he has consistently demonstrated the ability to handle pressure in meaningful games.
The timing of the trade also creates an intriguing possibility.
Chicago opens a three-game road series against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday, but with Gausman going on Saturday, it is not likely he will pitch in that three-game series.
