Jerry Jones and Brian Schottenheimer have the Dallas Cowboys’ offense in safe hands with Dak Prescott, George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb leading the line for the 2026 NFL season. The Cowboys might have finished the 2025 season with a 7-9-1 record and missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season, but the offense can’t be blamed for their disappointing campaign as it scored 471 points, the seventh-highest total in the NFL.
Jones enters the 2026 NFL season with the goal of ending the Cowboys’ 30-year Super Bowl drought. The Cowboys owner has revamped the defense by trading Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers and bringing in reinforcements in the form of Rashan Gary, Caleb Downs and Von Miller. The franchise wants to win and win now.

But it’s not all about the present either. Jones is also looking to the Cowboys’ future beyond Prescott. Joe Milton is one name that was viewed as a possible replacement. But this proposition took a hit when the Cowboys decided to waive him and keep Sam Howell as Prescott’s backup.
However, after Schottenheimer expressed a desire to bring back Milton if he cleared waivers, Jones and the Cowboys listened to their head coach and re-signed Milton to the practice squad after he cleared waivers.
Milton labeled the Cowboys decision to waive him as “shocking.” He further added, “It’s life, man. You’ve got to be able to live with it and roll with it and be able to deliver blows back whenever it’s time.”
When asked if this decision changes anything for him, Milton said, “Nah, I’m still the best quarterback in my eyes. So it is what it is. It’s just something you gotta live with, take it to the chin.”
The Cowboys will play their first regular-season game against the New York Giants on September 13 after finishing the preseason with a 2-1 record. The Giants will host Dallas at MetLife Stadium in the Week 1 matchup.
