In his first season with the Dallas Cowboys, George Pickens hit career highs in targets (137), receptions (93), yards (1,429) and touchdowns (nine). He took over as the team's leading receiver after CeeDee Lamb missed three games due to a high ankle sprain.
However, with an expiring contract, his future in Dallas is in question. With no extension in place, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Cowboys are expected to franchise tag the wide receiver. It would be a one-year, $28 million contract fully guaranteed.
Not only would it keep Pickens with the Cowboys for an additional season, but allow each side more time to reach a long-term extension.

However, on Sunday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network noted that tagging Pickens and then trading could be on the table.
“My understanding is that a tag and trade scenario is considered to be a possibility for Dallas, and actually, the value would make some sense here,” Rapoport said. “Traded for him for a third round pick, maybe let’s say they could get a second rounder, just throwing something out there, for instance. That would be really good value for Dallas.”
While Pickens has been a valuable asset, his Spotrac market value currently sits at $30.6 million annually. That would be a major financial commitment and make him the second Cowboys wide receiver to make over $30 million a year, joining Lamb ($34 million).
While the Cowboys weigh their options, Pickens' situation will be one of the team's biggest offseason decisions. Dallas has several options, though, whether to let him walk, use the franchise tag, reach a long-term deal, or find a trade partner.
