The Dallas Cowboys are making another adjustment to their coaching staff as they look to get their struggling defense back on track.
Defensive coordinator Christian Parker is moving from the sidelines to the coaches’ booth to call plays, owner and general manager Jerry Jones announced Tuesday. The decision follows Dallas’ 24-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 5, dropping the Cowboys to 2-3 on the season.
With the Green Bay Packers up next, Dallas is hoping the change gives Parker a better perspective of the field and helps the defense begin to show improvement.
Cowboys move Christian Parker to coaches’ booth
Parker will now call defensive plays from the coaches’ booth rather than the sideline, giving him a different vantage point as he works to manage the unit.
The adjustment comes after Dallas struggled to contain Tampa Bay, surrendering 241 rushing yards in the loss. Running back Bucky Irving accounted for 165 of those yards and scored twice, exposing continued issues with the Cowboys’ run defense.
Jones explained that the organization is looking for ways to change its approach and improve the team’s results.
The move also comes as Parker navigates his first season as an NFL defensive coordinator. Dallas entered the year expecting the new defensive leadership to help turn things around, but the early results have left the team searching for answers.
Christian Parker’s defense continues to struggle
The Cowboys’ defensive statistics highlight the challenges Parker is facing. Dallas ranks 31st in the NFL in total defense, allowing 395.4 yards per game, while its 168.4 rushing yards allowed per contest rank last in the league. The defense has also failed to record an interception through five games.
Those struggles have made it difficult for Dallas to consistently get off the field and give its offense more opportunities. Against Tampa Bay, the Cowboys had trouble stopping the run and generating takeaways, allowing the Buccaneers to control the game for long stretches.
Moving Parker upstairs could help him identify offensive tendencies and coverage breakdowns with a broader view of the action. However, the change in location will need to translate into better execution from the players on the field.
Cowboys need defensive improvement against Packers
The Cowboys have added veteran defensive coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant, giving Parker another experienced voice as the team tries to address its problems. Pettine has previous NFL defensive coordinator experience and worked with Parker in Green Bay.
However, the primary focus remains on Parker and whether the latest adjustment can help Dallas improve before its Week 6 matchup with the Packers.
Green Bay is coming off a 31-7 victory over the Chicago Bears, presenting another challenge for a Cowboys defense that has struggled to limit opposing offenses. Dallas will need to tackle more consistently, contain the run and create turnovers to have a better chance of changing the outcome.
At 2-3, the Cowboys still have time to recover, but their defensive issues need to be addressed quickly. Moving Parker to the coaches’ booth represents another attempt to find a solution. Whether it works will depend on how effectively Dallas turns the change into better performances on the field.
