The Dallas Cowboys have no plans to rush into a contract extension with Joey Porter Jr. after acquiring the cornerback from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Instead, the team wants its new defensive addition to make an impact before addressing his long-term future.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the Cowboys’ decision on X following the trade. Dallas is focused on adding Porter to its defense as it pursues a Super Bowl run rather than immediately committing to a new deal.
The move ends Porter’s contract standoff with Pittsburgh. The 26-year-old had been seeking an extension throughout the offseason but did not appear in any of the Steelers’ first three games.
Porter is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Steelers ultimately traded him to Dallas for a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-round selection after the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
The cornerback brings starting experience and physical coverage skills to a Dallas defense that has struggled early in the season. He recorded 52 tackles, one sack, one interception and 14 passes defensed in 14 games last season.
His arrival is particularly timely for the Cowboys, who have dealt with injuries in their secondary. Cornerbacks Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. have both been managing injuries, creating uncertainty at the position.

Dallas now has an opportunity to evaluate Porter in its defensive system before making a major financial commitment. The team will also need to determine how quickly he can contribute after missing Pittsburgh’s opening games.
Porter’s immediate focus will be learning the Cowboys’ defense and getting back on the field. For Dallas, the trade offers a chance to strengthen a vulnerable unit while postponing a significant contract decision.
The two sides could revisit extension talks later, but for now, Porter’s performance will be central to what comes next.
