The Dallas Cowboys sported the NFL’s worst scoring defense in 2025, allowing 511 points during the regular season and ultimately missing out on the playoffs for a second successive year. That performance cost Matt Eberflus his role as defensive coordinator for "America’s Team."

Under Eberflus, Cowboys fans saw opposing offenses gain more yards against their unit (6,409) than all but two teams; only the Cincinnati Bengals (6,475) and Washington Commanders (6,533) saw inferior yardage suppression.

Eberflus also struggled to inhibit opponents' passing games, as head coach Brian Schottenheimer watched his defense concede the second-highest number of passing touchdowns (35) in the league. Interceptions were just as rare; the Cowboys accumulated just six picks across 17 games.

Poor discipline stood as another key factor behind the defensive failings of the Jerry Jones-owned team in 2025. By the end of the regular season, Eberflus’ defenders racked up more penalties (134) than all other outfits bar the New York Giants.

Change was necessary and, in 2026, the Cowboys defense will operate under respected defensive mastermind Vic Fangio’s 34-year-old protege, Christian Parker.

Parker worked alongside Fangio with the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles – a period that included Super Bowl glory in 2024 as passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach for Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni.

Now, having learned from one of the most revered defensive minds in the NFL, Parker is “ready” to place his mark as Cowboys’ defensive coordinator in 2026 from Week 1.

In his introductory Dallas press conference on Wednesday, Parker outlined that although his strategy will remain fluid, he would prefer to steer away from the team’s longstanding 4-3 scheme in favor of a 3-4 setup.

“The first thing is we’re going to be multiple. Whenever you form a defensive structure it’s about the players that you have,” Parker said.

“So [the] core principle is we’re going to be 3-4 by nature but, you know, 4-3 spacing would be appropriate, 4-2-5 and nickel, different front structures, coverages behind it. But I would say being multiple is probably the most important thing about it.”

Should his plans come to fruition, it would mark the first time that Dallas deviates from a consistent 4-3 defense since 2012, when Rob Ryan oversaw defensive output.

But questions regarding the aptitude of Dallas’ current roster in a 3-4 formation remain. While linemen Quinnen Williams, Osa Odighizuwa and Kenny Clark are considered first-rate talent, there exists steep uncertainty around the quality of Parker’s linebackers.

The 2026 NFL Draft could allay potential fears. Prospects such as Ohio State Buckeyes safety Caleb Downs and Auburn Tigers EDGE Keldric Faulk stand as options at picks No. 12 and No. 20. Alternatively, the Cowboys may dip into free agency, with 27-year-old linebacker Devin Bush a possible fit.
