The Dallas Cowboys have created additional financial flexibility ahead of the 2026 season.
Dallas has restructured the contracts of defensvie tackle Kenny Clark, cornerback DaRon Bland and tight end Jake Ferguson, creating slightly more than $19 million in salary-cap space, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer.
The Cowboys reportedly had approximately $14.2 million in available cap space before completing the moves. Dallas can now use the added flexibility to make an in-season acquisition, carry unused space into 2027 or potentially help fund a long-term extension for star wide receiver George Pickens.
Cowboys convert salaries into signing bonuses
Dallas created the space by converting portions of each player’s base salary into signing bonuses. This allows the Cowboys to spread the salary-cap charges across the remaining years of each contract.
Clark had his $8.8 million base salary converted after Dallas previously turned his $11 million roster bonus into a signing bonus in March. The latest adjustment will add approximately $1.5 million to his 2027 cap hit.
The Cowboys also converted Bland’s $12 million base salary and Ferguson $7.25 million salary into signing bonuses. Bland’s annual cap number will increase by approximately $2.15 million over the remainder of his deal, while Ferguson’s will rise by about $1.2 million.
The restructures do not reduce the players’ earnings. Instead, the moves push portions of their cap charges into future seasons.
Bland signed a four-year, $92 million extension in 2025, while Ferguson agreed to a four-year $52 million deal. Clark’s current contract keeps him in Dallas through 2028.
Additional space could help Cowboys retain Pickens
Creating more than $19 million in cap space does not necessarily mean Dallas is preparing to make an immediate acquisition. However, it gives the front office several options, including the possibility of working toward a new contract with Pickens.
Pickens signed his franchise tag to return for the 2026 season after combining with CeeDee Lamb for 2,506 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns last year. Keeping both receivers together beyond this season could require another substantial financial commitment.
The newly created cap room does not guarantee an extension, but any unused space can be carried into 2027 and give Dallas more flexibility while negotiating with Pickens. The Cowboys could also use the room to absorb part of a new signing bonus if the two sides reach can agreement during the season.
Dallas can remain aggressive
The Cowboys could also use the cap space to complete a trade or address weaknesses that emerge during the season. Dallas acquired Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams from the New York Jets before last year’s trade deadline, showing its willingness to make an aggressive in-season move.
The latest restructuring is part of a larger financial strategy. Since March, Dallas has restructured the contracts of Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Tyler Smithy while also reworking the deals of Terence Steele and Malik Hooker.
Restructuring contracts provide immediate relief, but pushes cap charges into future seasons. The Cowboys appear comfortable accepting that tradeoff to keep their current roster competitive.
Whether the money goes toward Pickens, a trade acquisition or future cap relief, Dallas now has the financial flexibility to pursue another major move.
