The Dallas Cowboys did a little addition on their practice squad roster on Thursday after signing one veteran tight end.
The team announced late on Thursday that they have signed tight end James Mitchell to their practice squad from the Carolina Panthers. James Mitchell started his career in Detroit for the Lions after being selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Virginia Tech.
Mitchell is a good veteran option to have with NFL experience and the ability to impact the game as a receiver and blocker if one of the top three tight ends misses time. In his three years in the league, Mitchell has brought in 16 receptions for 169 yards and one touchdown.
He will be behind starter Jake Ferguson, Brevyn Spann-Ford and Luke Schoonmaker on the depth chart to start the season and share a tight end practice squad with Michael Trigg, a rookie out of Baylor.
Mitchell has played in 35 NFL games with one start, most of those with the Detroit Lions. He was most recently in the Carolina Panthers’ training camp. Despite his lack of production, Mitchell was viewed as a mid-round tight end by many during the 2022 NFL draft cycle.
James Mitchell’s strength comes as a pass-catcher, as he sports plus athleticism for the position. He is only an adequate blocker in the run game at best.
The Dallas Cowboys, led by Dak Prescott, face off against their division rivals Jaxson Dart and the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football on September 13 in East Rutherford, N.J., at MetLife Stadium in a game that will set the tone of the division off the bat.
