Jalen Rose was an important member of the Michigan Wolverines’ iconic Fab Five. Alongside Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson, he helped the team reach two straight NCAA championship games in 1992 and 1993. He had a 13-season NBA career highlighted by the 2000 Most Improved Player award.
Rose also helped the Indiana Pacers reach the NBA Finals that same year. Now, more than 30 years after his college debut, his alma mater is bringing him back to the facility.
UM interim President Domenico Grasso announced at the recent Board of Regents meeting that the 53-year-old will serve as the main speaker at the University of Michigan's 2026 Spring Commencement ceremony in May. Per reports, he will also receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the event.
He announced the news himself on his X handle recently, penning, "I am so humbled and honored to be the main speaker at Michigan's Spring Commencement ceremony. I will also be receiving an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. See you May 2 at The Big House! #GoBlue."
This special recognition honors what Rose has accomplished since the end of his NBA career. In 2011, he opened the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy, a tuition-free public high school in Detroit. It now serves over 400 students a year and has a 95% graduation rate. Every student who has graduated from the academy has been accepted into a college or career program.
His job has also earned him the NBA’s Bob Lanier Community Impact Award and the National Civil Rights Museum’s Sports Legacy Award. And recently, the University of Michigan gave him its President’s Medal of Excellence. The hoops community didn't waste time congratulating him following the big news.
"Go Blue!! Thank you Jalen. You embody the Michigan values!" one wrote.
Another viewer added, "Congratulations!! Well-deserved honor!"
A third one noted, "You are a great Ambassador for the University of Michigan! We're still waiting for the banners to come back. Go BLUE!!!!"
The fourth fan claimed, "Big congrats, Jalen, that's a full-circle moment."
A random X user penned, “Dope Jalen congrats … they thought you was thugged out.”
Rose now works as a college basketball analyst for TNT Sports and stars in the Detroit-based TV series South West High on Tubi. His commencement speech on May 2 at Michigan Stadium will add one more line to his decorated resume.
