The Washington Commanders will need more from Jayden Daniels as they prepare for their upcoming matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. Running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt is expected to miss the game with a groin injury, creating another challenge for Washington’s offense.
Ben Standig reported the latest development on Saturday, leaving the Commanders facing questions about how they will distribute their backfield workload.
Croskey-Merritt’s absence would remove an important option from Washington’s rushing attack. The rookie produced 82 rushing yards and a touchdown on 11 carries against the New York Giants, giving the offense an effective complement to Daniels.
Daniels could become even more important to Washington’s offensive plans. The quarterback returned against New York after missing time with a dislocated elbow, rushing for 103 yards and two touchdowns while throwing for 199 yards.
His mobility gives the Commanders another way to move the chains when their running backs struggle to find room. However, Washington must balance that advantage against the physical demands of asking its quarterback to carry a heavier rushing workload.
Austin Ekeler and Rachaad White could also factor into the backfield rotation, depending on their availability. Both running backs have dealt with injuries, making their health an important consideration as Washington prepares its game plan.
Washington also needs Daniels to remain effective as a passer. San Francisco presents a difficult test, and the Commanders cannot afford to become predictable by relying too heavily on quarterback runs.

The offensive line must provide adequate protection while the coaching staff creates opportunities for Daniels to distribute the ball quickly. Establishing a dependable rushing rotation would help prevent the 49ers from concentrating their defensive attention on the quarterback.
Croskey-Merritt’s potential absence puts greater responsibility on Daniels, but Washington still needs a collective offensive response. Protecting the quarterback, using the available backs effectively and avoiding costly mistakes will be essential if the Commanders hope to leave San Francisco with a victory.
