The Washington Commanders have abruptly made a coaching change, right before the start of the 2026 NFL regular season.
Washington announced on Monday morning, July 27, that they have fired tight ends coach Ben Steele. The tight ends coach was hired by the Commanders earlier this offseason. The team has said that they will have no further comment regarding his firing.
Typically, that's not the best sign.
It's unclear what exactly led to Steele's ousting on Monday morning, but clearly, if they are firing him weeks before the start of the regular season, it's likely not for something good.

The Commanders released a brief statement on the decision to fire the tight ends coach on Monday morning.
"We are parting ways with tight ends coach Ben Steele. The team will have no further comment at this time," the team said in a statement.
NFL fans react to the firing
"No further comment instead of we wish he and his family the best. Dude messed up," one fan wrote.
"How do you get hired this season then get fired before training camp," one fan added.
"Part ways something happen now go shake up the NFC and go sign Stefon Diggs," one fan added.
"Oh my god what did he do," one fan added.
"That’s usually not a good sign when the last line is no further comment versus we with you the best in future endeavors. Yikes," one fan added.
Given that it's the NFL, more details are likely to come out. However, for now, Washington is choosing to stay quiet regarding the decision to abruptly fire their tight ends coach right before the season.
