The Washington Commanders could turn to Austin Ekeler for a larger role if second-year running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt cannot play in Week 6.
Commanders HC Dan Quinn must consider how to distribute the available touches if the second-year back is sidelined. Ekeler’s receiving ability makes him a strong option for additional work, particularly on passing downs.
Ekeler could help quarterback Jayden Daniels by providing a reliable outlet when defenses apply pressure. His experience as a receiver also gives Washington another way to move the ball into space without relying entirely on downfield throws.
However, a larger role would not automatically make Ekeler a traditional workhorse. Rachaad White could still handle carries, particularly on early downs and in short-yardage situations. Splitting responsibilities would allow Washington to adjust without placing the entire burden on one back.
Croskey-Merritt’s availability remains the key variable. If he is ruled out, Commanders HC Dan Quinn and his staff must decide how to divide the second-year back’s opportunities between Ekeler, White and the other available backs. The final practice reports should clarify Washington’s options.
The decision matters as Washington prepares for a road matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. A dependable ground game and effective short passes could help keep the offense balanced and reduce pressure on Daniels.

Ekeler’s versatility makes him a strong candidate for more touches if Croskey-Merritt is unavailable. Still, Washington could preserve a committee approach, using Robinson for interior runs while giving Ekeler opportunities as both a runner and receiver.
Until the team confirms Croskey-Merritt’s status and outlines its plan, it is too early to say Ekeler would receive most of the workload. His role could grow, but the final split will depend on the active backs and the coaching staff’s game plan.
