Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. is facing a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge following a traffic stop in Carmel, Indiana.
The charge was filed Monday, Oct. 19, after officers stopped Richardson on Oct. 12. FOX59 first reported the case.
Court documents say the stop involved a vehicle with expired registration. An officer reportedly noticed the smell of marijuana and asked Richardson about it. Richardson allegedly said he had smoked in the car and had a small amount of marijuana with him.
Police reported finding a small jar containing a substance believed to be marijuana and an open bag of THC-infused gummies inside the vehicle. The substance later tested positive for THC, court documents indicate.
Richardson was also cited over the vehicle registration. He waived an initial hearing, and court records list a bench trial for Jan. 4, 2027. The charge is an allegation, and the case has not been resolved in court.
The Colts acknowledged the situation and said they were gathering more information, adding that they would have no further comment at that time. The team has not announced any change to Richardson’s roster status.

The news adds another complication to Richardson’s effort to establish his future in Indianapolis. The former fourth overall pick has spent the 2026 season as the team’s backup quarterback behind Daniel Jones, rather than its starter.
His future with the franchise was already a subject of discussion as he approaches the final year of his rookie contract.
For now, the legal process remains separate from his football role. Any team or league action has not been announced, and the next major development in the case is expected to come through the court proceedings in January.
