Does Pat McAfee have too much power on ESPN’s “College GameDay” show?
News broke on Wednesday, revealing that the show’s top producer, Jim Gaiero, was being taken off of the show. The 2026 college football regular season is set to begin next weekend. We’re a little more than 7 days away from the first “College GameDay” show of the year.
Why was Gaiero taken off the show?
ESPN is reportedly pushing the narrative that it wants more help with Super Bowl and golf coverage. However, others inside ESPN are telling Awful Announcing that it was due to “friction” with McAfee.
“Multiple sources tell AA that friction with Pat McAfee likely influenced the move. ESPN says Gaiero’s reassignment to Super Bowl duties and golf coverage better fit his career goals and family life,” they reported.
Last year, McAfee took a pretty clear shot at some of ESPN’s producers.
“If you think about old white people and old ESPN people, those are really the people that hate me the most at this stage of life,” he said. “Now granted, there’s some other groups that certainly have threatened my life on a pretty regular basis, I’d say they hate me too. But throughout the entirety, old whites and the old ESPN people over the last like three years have really hated me. That’s who all the producers are of GameDay too. So now — it’s been a fun run. College football is great. OK, cheers. Have a great day,” he wrote on X.
“He was absolutely talking about Jim and Matthew Garrett. That isn’t up for debate,” one source told AA.
Does McAfee have too much power at ESPN?
McAfee is a star, but should he have this much influence?
“McAfee is six degrees of separation about everything happening at ESPN,” one fan wrote.
“Friction with Pat McAfee, that just can’t possibly be true,” another fan joked.
“Centralizing the whole network of ESPN into 2-3 talking heads is stupid. When they fall you will have no one. Letting everyone that is good at their job have more of an equal share would be less risky. This is simple decentralization. But again. They are dumb…,” one fan added.
“Can’t wait for the book about how Mcafee and Stephen A destroyed ESPN in 10 years,” one fan added.
The first “College GameDay” of the year is set for next weekend. We’ll have to see then how much the show has changed.
