Nick Saban has long been one of the faces of college football, but many of the sport’s fans are turning on him, due to his opinions on the Protect College Sports Act.
The legendary Alabama Crimson Tide head coach turned “College GameDay” analyst has made it clear where he stands. He believes college sports needs saving. If that means putting a cap on player earnings, he’s for it. Meanwhile, Saban made hundreds of millions of dollars throughout his career.
Saban argued on “First Take” this morning that the market for coaches and players should be totally different.
“That’s like asking me ‘Does a student’s scholarship equal the professor’s pay?’ I mean, how much value does a coach create for a university?” he said.
College football fans are turning on him, though. Many believe that he’s being arrogant and hypocritical.
“Nick Saban’s arrogance after joining us talking heads is starting to bother me, as if he’s the voice of all things college football. You quit when you no longer could control everything + out-talent everyone, took your ball and went home,” Brad Crawford of CBS Sports shared.
College football fans turning on Saban
“I don’t know about everyone here but I pay to watch players play not the coaches coach,” one fan wrote.
“What a (expletive) loser. Made millions off the backs of players and even paid some off under the table but it’s (expletive) them now,” one fan added.
“If athletes create less value, then surely universities would be comfortable letting the free market decide, no?” Mina Kimes shared.
“Easy to see why coaches/former coaches are in favor of the capping athlete pay. Last thing they want is funds being diverted to labor instead of coaching/admin salaries. But there’s a reason the best players make more than coaches in the NFL,” one fan added.
“What are we doing here? Athletic departments are nothing without student-athletes,” one fan added.
Saban has made it clear where he stands, but many of college football fans are in opposition to him.
