Gary Danielson’s days of covering college football games are over, but thankfully CBS got a quality replacement to call games alongside Brad Nessler.
Danielson was the lead color commentator for CBS from 2006-2025. He was mostly known for his SEC coverage, but the network eventually got the rights to Big Ten football games. His final broadcast was the Sun Bowl between Arizona State and Duke on Dec. 31, 2025.
“To have done it with somebody who is unmatched in what you do has been a privilege. It’s been an honor,” Nessler told Danielson. “I’m going to miss you, our team is going to miss you, CBS is going to miss you, and college football is going to miss you.”
While Nessler probably misses being in the booth with Danielson, he’s amped up about having Davis by his side. Judging by the reactions online, fans are happy to hear Davis’ analysis as well.

“The CBS transition from Gary Danielson to Charles Davis: seamless Davis is elite,” one fan declared.
“Charles Davis is the man! Good to have him do College Games again,” a second fan commented.
“I like Charles Davis. Hes a real pro in the booth,” a third fan said.
“Charles Davis is a really good analyst. I was excited when he popped on with Nessler before kickoff,” another fan wrote.
Nothing but respect.
When Danielson announced his retirement last year, he made it clear that he’s glad Davis is taking his spot at CBS.
“I have had the greatest seat in the house for 36 years and have loved every minute of it,” Danielson said. “I have discussed the timing of this moment with CBS Sports leadership over the past few years and we felt it was important I remained with the team during our transition to the Big Ten. As we enter our second full season of Big Ten football and my 20th at CBS Sports, the timing just feels right. I have so much respect for Charles Davis as both a person and an analyst. He is going to shine in this role and fit so well with this team. I have been blessed to work with incredible teammates throughout my career and I look forward to one more memorable season with Brad, Jenny, Craig Silver, Steve Milton and the crew.”
We’re only one week in for the 2026 season, but Davis certainly has what it takes to thrive in this role.
