Fox Sports radio host Colin Cowherd isn’t ready to sell all his stock in Patrick Mahomes, but he’s not exactly ready to sing his praises.
Mahomes, a six-time Pro Bowler and three-time Super Bowl champion, has already put together a Hall of Fame résumé. That being said, he finally faced some adversity last season. Not only did the Kansas City Chiefs fail to make the playoffs, he suffered a torn ACL in December.
While it’s totally possible that he’ll bounce back from that injury and return to his MVP form, Cowherd believes we may have seen the best of Mahomes.
“What if we’ve seen the best of Patrick Mahomes, who’s coming off an ugly injury?” Cowherd said on his show Wednesday. “Think about this. He enters the league with the o-line having a Pro Bowler at right tackle and left tackle, Andy Reid is in his coaching prime, his wide receiver/tight end group is an A. His division has the Raiders who are the worst team in the league, Denver had Vance Joseph as a head coach and Case Keenum as a quarterback, and Anthony Lynn was coaching 37-year-old Philip Rivers. The division stunk! Now it’s [Jim] Harbaugh and [Justin] Herbert, Bo Nix and Sean Payton, and Fernando Mendoza and Klint Kubiak.”

Cowherd also mentioned Mahomes’ recent dip in production and how he’s no longer an unstoppable force at the quarterback position.
“Over the last 3 years his passer rating is lower than Russell Wilson in that time. His completion percentage in that stretch is worse than Daniel Jones.”
For what it’s worth, Mahomes hasn’t thrown for over 4,000 yards or 30 touchdown passes since the 2023 season.
Will Mahomes be ready for Week 1?
The Chiefs have not yet announced Mahomes’ status for their season opener against the Broncos, but he’s definitely doing everything in his power to get full clearance from the medical staff.
“It feels great, pushing every single day, trying to stack days together,” Mahomes said, via NFL.com. “I feel like when you’re tired, sometimes you don’t even think about it. So, I’m trying to protect it, but at the same time, I’m trying to push it and get myself ready to go for the season.”
There’s no question Mahomes will have a chip on his shoulder this season. Will he be able to silence his critics though? Only time will tell.
