Shedeur Sanders played the third quarter and part of fourth quarter in the Cleveland Browns’ defeat in the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears, whereas Deshaun Watson started the game. The Bears registered a comfortable 34-10 victory, with Sanders failing to make a major impact barring a couple of encouraging moments
Sanders completed 6 of 11 passes for 79 yards, failing to lead the Browns to any points during his time on the field. What made matters worse was his interception in the fourth quarter. On the other hand, Watson completed 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards. The veteran quarterback looked more comfortable in the pocket, helping the Browns score 10 points.

The Browns will face the Bills in the next preseason game, and the quarterback battle between Watson and Sanders is entering its final stage. With Watson seemingly gaining an edge after his performance against the Bears, Sanders will be looking to gain some ground in the competition with a strong showing against the Bills.
However, the situation is expected to be different for Sanders. Both the Browns quarterbacks have continued to rotate first-team reps during training camp, with Todd Monken using different practice days to evaluate the duo. Sanders and Watson also split first-team reps during the joint practice with the Bills.
Monken, talking after the joint practice with the Bills, indicated that some veteran starters might be rested for the upcoming game. Addressing reporters, Monken said, “I anticipate some of our younger players playing Saturday.”
This comes as a blow for Sanders, who is looking to bounce back in the competition. While Watson operated with the first-team starters against the Bears in the preseason opener, Sanders could have fewer first-team players around him against the Bills if the Browns decide to rest the veterans. Still, it will still be an opportunity for Sanders to strengthen his case.
