Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson’s fight to become the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback might be over, but the duo continues to be the center of attention during the 2026 NFL season. Todd Monken chose Watson as the QB1 for the Browns’ season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which meant the veteran was under the microscope from the start of the season. Every opportunity was crucial for Watson as Sanders lurked in the background, ready to take away his starting spot.

The start against the Jaguars was far from ideal for Watson as he struggled to find his feet, leading to the Browns being thrashed 34-10 in the season opener. But the veteran quarterback handled the pressure and criticism in style and bounced back in the next three games to strengthen his hold on the QB1 job.

Watson’s performance has shifted the attention to Sanders, who has had very limited action during the 2026 season. There have also been substantial trade rumors surrounding him. Jeremy Fowler reported that the Browns would be open to trading him for the right price.

However, Browns beat reporter Daryl Ruiter pushed back on that report Monday in a post on X. Ruiter wrote on X, “Browns are not looking to trade QB Shedeur Sanders. They really like how Sanders has developed under Todd Monken this year and want to keep developing him. There is absolutely nothing cooking there.”

Does that mean Sanders’ future with the Browns is safe? ESPN’s Tony Grossi disagrees, as he reminds us of the blockbuster Myles Garrett trade to the Los Angeles Rams, a decision that sent shockwaves through the NFL. While addressing the Sanders trade reports, Grossi said, “They weren’t interested in trading Myles Garrett. We know that. So take those unidentified, anonymous things for what they’re worth.”

Watson has been terrific for the Browns, who have won three of their first four games. However, since Watson’s contract expires after the 2026 season, it will be interesting to see what the Browns and Monken decide to do with Sanders before the trade deadline.
