The Clemson Tigers are not relishing the idea of having to face LSU tomorrow night, especially after Lane Kiffin’s side added a pair of NFL players back to his side. But while a Louisiana court has decided that doing so may be legal, Clemson believes that it would still be a breach of contract.
According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Clemson officials have notified LSU that letting former pro football players compete on Saturday may be a breach of contract. Clemson general counsel Chip Hood stated in an email that “certain eligibility” issues may break “contractual obligations between the two parties” which are “not relieved by the ongoing disputes.”
However, the email does not indicate that Clemson is seeking financial damages or intends on taking any sort of legal action against LSU. Clemson stated that it “supports the position of the NCAA and our conferences regarding the eligibility of professional athletes returning to play college sports.”
Pointless Finger-Pointing
But the email is tantamount to a finger-wagging from Clemson directed at LSU. With no sort of legal threat behind it, there won’t even be a consideration for LSU to make any sort of change to its plans heading into Saturday.
Fans largely mocked Clemson for their actions here:
“What’s the point of formally notifying LSU if you’re not going to do anything about it?” one user on X asked.
“In other words, Clemson said ‘We hope y’all play those formal NFL players Saturday so that the game won’t mean anything because we know we’re going to lose anyway!’” another mocked.
“Then why even bring it up if you aren’t seeking anything?”

The point might be moot anyway as the specific ex-NFL players aren’t expected to even be on the gameday roster for the Tigers.
It really does seem like Clemson is performatively making much ado about nothing – at least as it pertains to tomorrow’s game.
