Tomorrow’s game between the 49ers and Rams could see 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey set a special NFL record.
According to ProFootballTalk, McCaffrey is currently tied with Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk for the most receiving touchdowns by a running back with 36. His next touchdown reception will be his 37th, giving him sole possession of the record – and he’ll have achieved it three seasons and a few dozen games faster than the former NFL MVP.
McCaffrey already averages four receiving touchdowns per season and had seven of them in 2025. So it probably won’t take him too long to reach the record if he can just continue to stay healthy.
He’s a Hall of Famer in the making.
McCaffrey and Faulk have already had quite a number of incredible similarities in their career: Both of them were first round picks for teams that eventually traded them (Faulk went from the Colts to the Rams, McCaffrey went from the Panthers to the 49ers), both immediately became Super Bowl contenders, both are part of the extremely exclusive club of players with 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season, and both have had multiple seasons of over 2,000 yards from scrummage.

Of course, staying healthy has always been the biggest obstacle of McCaffrey’s career. He’s missed over 30 games in his career and has played a full season only twice since 2020.
McCaffrey also turned 30 recently, which is the age that historically most running backs of any skill level tend to hit the wall. Maybe he’ll be the exception, but the data shows that he has far more football games behind him than in front of him.
Simply put, McCaffrey will want to make 2026 one of his best years ever. And if he can break that record tomorrow, he’ll establish himself as one of the best to ever do it.
