The Patriots have built their defense around a young secondary, and Christian Gonzalez has quickly become the centerpiece of it. After a Pro Bowl season in 2025, the cornerback made a significant jump on the NFL's Top 100 list, climbing from No. 84 a year ago to No. 28 this time around.
He played 14 games for New England last season, finishing with 10 pass breakups, and quarterbacks who targeted him posted a 57.0 passer rating, third-best among cornerbacks with at least 500 snaps.
That kind of production has put him in a strong position heading into extension talks this offseason, and the numbers around the league only back that up further.

Gonzalez became eligible for his first contract extension this offseason, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft said last month that the team had put forward an offer that would reset the cornerback market.
A deal has not been reached yet, and Tuesday brought a new wrinkle. Gonzalez was not present for the start of the Patriots' joint practice with the Colts, according to reports.
There may be a link to Monday's session. Gonzalez took a hard landing late in practice while covering wide receiver Romeo Doubs on an end-zone fade, and his absence a day later could be tied to that. He remains engaged in the ongoing contract discussions regardless.
"CB Christian Gonzalez is not present for the start of Tuesday's Patriots-Colts practice," ESPN's Mike Reiss shared. "At the end of Monday's practice, he had a hard landing while covering WR Romeo Doubs on an end-zone fade, so potentially could be related to that. Also engaged in contract extension talks."
The market Gonzalez is negotiating in has shifted fast. Denzel Ward sits at the top with a $31.1 million annual average, and Trent McDuffie is close behind after landing a four-year, $124 million deal with the Rams following his trade to Los Angeles.
Ahmad Gardner and Derek Stingley Jr. have also crossed the $30 million mark annually. That backdrop works in Gonzalez's favor.
Kraft has indicated the deal on the table for Gonzalez would carry an average annual value above $31 million. The No. 17 pick in the 2023 draft still has two years left on his rookie deal after New England exercised his fifth-year option, but both sides appear focused on turning that into a longer-term commitment.
