Patriots fans have a little pep in their step this Monday morning. Cornerback Christian Gonzalez is back to work at practice after two weeks away. Was it an injury? Some kind of hold-in? The truth may never be known.
Now, what does it mean for the future with the team?
Christian Gonzalez contract standoff with Patriots
Even without a mega-contract extension, which Gonzalez has publicly lobbied for, he is back on the field and appears prepared to honor his current rookie deal, one that will compensate him with just over $2.2 million this year.
Compare that to fellow 2023 Draft first-round corner Devon Witherspoon in Seattle, who will cash in for upwards of $59 million guaranteed over the next two seasons, and you could see reasons for Gonzalez’s perceived disappointment.
Vrabel, Wolf back Christian Gonzalez extension
The Patriots seem to value Gonzalez and desire to keep him around.
“Each side is trying to do what is right for them,” said personnel man Eliot Wolf on the team’s broadcast of the preseason game with the Eagles.
“Christian is a tremendous player that we’ve been on record multiple times saying we want him to be here, and that hasn’t changed. We’re going to continue working with his representation to try to get something done.”

To his credit, Gonzalez has been a warrior for the team this summer. He’s been the best Patriot in practice during the time he was out there.
Christian Gonzalez key to No. 1 Patriots secondary
The Oregon product, a Pro Bowler in 2025 and a second-team All-Pro in 2024, is obviously the key to what Pro Football Focus rates as the NFL’s top-ranked secondary.
Keeping him happy and here in New England is something head coach Mike Vrabel has repeatedly emphasized.
Patriots prep Christian Gonzalez for Seahawks opener
Getting Gonzalez to practice with just two days to be ready for the preseason finale in Cleveland, and then 13 days to the Sept. 9 opener in Seattle, is the team’s highest priority.
“I’m going to focus on today,” said Vrabel on Monday morning. “I’m not ready to talk about Week 1. I hope that we have to do everything we can to get the guys ready. Each guy has to be ready individually, and then I have to find a way to make sure that the football team is ready and that we’re conditioned and ready to go.”
