As the Timberwolves prepare for their matchup against the Houston Rockets, uncertainty surrounds Anthony Edwards’ availability. Minnesota is in a tightly contested Western Conference race, currently fifth and tied with the Denver Nuggets. With 10 games remaining, every result will be critical as the team pushes for a potential fourth seed.

The Timberwolves have enjoyed a strong season, led by guard Edwards and forward Julius Randle, but injuries remain a concern. Head coach Chris Finch said Edwards is “still on his own return-to-play protocols at the moment”(h/t Chris Hine, Minnesota Star Tribune).

Edwards has missed the past four games due to a right knee injury that became inflamed after he initially played through it. Earlier this season, he also dealt with a right hamstring strain that sidelined him briefly.

Despite injuries slowing him at times, Anthony Edwards remains a dynamic force for Minnesota on both ends of the floor. Through 58 games, Edwards is averaging 29.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 49.2% from the field and 40.2% from 3-point range. His combination of strength, explosiveness, and ability to absorb contact makes him one of the league’s most dangerous slashers.

In his absence, Minnesota has leaned more heavily on backup guard Ayo Dosunmu to help run the offense and initiate sets. Alongside forwards Julius Randle and Jaden McDaniels, the Timberwolves have still managed to defend at a high level, using their length and versatility to disrupt opponents.

However, Edwards’ presence remains central to the team’s ceiling as it pushes for playoff positioning.

Former Georgia Bulldog and the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, He has developed into one of the league’s top guards. He has earned four All-Star selections, two All-NBA honors, All-Rookie recognition, and the 2025–26 All-Star Game MVP.

He has been a driving force behind the franchise’s success, combining elite production with a charismatic personality that resonates on and off the court. That relatability and energy have made him one of the NBA’s most popular young stars.

On July 8, 2023, Edwards signed a five-year rookie max extension that keeps him under contract through the 2028–29 season. With a long-term investment in place, Minnesota will likely prioritize caution, allowing him time to recover fully rather than risking further injury ahead of the playoffs.
