China hosted the world's first-ever robot MMA fight, which just occurred as part of Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend (URKL), a robotics competition hosted by Chinese company EngineAI. The fight took place in Shenzhen Nanshan Cultural and Sports Center, according to Global Times, with famed movie star Donnie Yen in attendance.
Chinese company EngineAI held the event to showcase the company’s full-sized humanoid robot, the T800, which is capable of hand-to-hand combat.
He also showcased his MMA inspiration in the movie “Flash Point” back in 2007. YouTube channel “Scenic Fights” does an excellent job breaking down his moves, which are inspired by combat sports like MMA, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu:
No footage has surfaced of the robots grappling, so maybe Yen and other martial artists still possess abilities the robots are not capable of yet. One can only hope the robot is not sent to Dagestan for two to three years.
The Future of Robotics
According to a press release by EngineAI Robotics, the company announced a 12,000 square meter manufacturing base back in May. Their goal is to make their base capable of manufacturing 10,000 units of their flagship T800 robot.
Founder and CEO Zhao Tongyang revealed how quickly the company, which was only founded in October 2023, has been growing from zero to scale in the field of humanoid robot production.
“From our first test machine in 2024, to the small-scale production of hundreds of PM01 units in 2025, and now to the qualitative leap toward a 10,000-unit delivery capability, we are entering a new phase of industrialization and commercialization,” he stated.
The aforementioned PM01 was the first robot to successfully execute a front flip (via CGTNEurope on YouTube):

While robot MMA will likely not replace real combat sports between human beings any time in the immediate future, the capabilities of these humanoid robots are getting more advanced as the industry develops and may cause concern for those who may be wary of such powerful technology.
