Patrick Mahomes has made an important decision ahead of his highly anticipated return to the field.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback is set to play against the Denver Broncos on Monday night, marking his return from the significant knee injury that ended his 2025 season.
One question entering the game was whether Mahomes would wear a brace on his surgically repaired knee.
Now there is an answer.
Mahomes told ESPN ahead of Monday night’s game that he plans to wear the knee brace against Denver. More importantly for Chiefs fans, Mahomes indicated that he has become comfortable playing with it.
ESPN shared what Mahomes had to say about the situation shortly before Kansas City’s season opener.
Patrick Mahomes Comfortable With Knee Brace
Mahomes’ decision provides another notable detail surrounding his return.
Wearing a brace could understandably require an adjustment for any quarterback, especially one whose ability to move outside the pocket has been such an important part of his game.
Mahomes, however, indicated that comfort isn’t a concern.
He has spent significant time working with the brace during his preparation for the season and said he feels comfortable wearing it.
That’s potentially encouraging news for Kansas City.
The Chiefs don’t simply need Mahomes available against Denver. They want the version of Mahomes capable of extending plays, escaping pressure and creating opportunities when a play breaks down.
The brace will be something fans immediately notice Monday night, but Mahomes’ comments suggest he isn’t worried about it becoming a distraction.
Mahomes Begins Next Chapter Against Broncos
Monday night represents the culmination of a lengthy comeback for Kansas City’s franchise quarterback.
Mahomes suffered a serious knee injury late in the 2025 season and has spent the months since working toward his return. Every step of his rehabilitation has carried added significance because of how important he remains to Kansas City’s hopes of returning to contention.
The Broncos should provide an immediate test.
Denver enters the season as the defending AFC West champion, making the divisional matchup an especially meaningful opening assignment for Mahomes and the Chiefs.
There will be plenty of attention on Mahomes’ throws, his mobility and how he responds when Denver’s pass rush forces him to move.
There will also be plenty of eyes on that left knee.
Mahomes has already made his decision about protecting it.
The brace is staying on, and the Chiefs quarterback feels comfortable with it.
