After finishing the previous season with a 6-11 record, the Kansas City Chiefs have decided to make some significant moves this offseason.

The Chiefs have chosen to trade All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. In return for McDuffie, the Chiefs will receive four draft picks: a first-round pick, a fifth-round pick and a sixth-round pick in 2026, along with a third-round pick in 2027.

Additionally, the Chiefs lost their other starting cornerback, Jaylen Watson, to the Rams in free agency. This decision may impact their strategy for the upcoming NFL Draft. CBS Sports' Pete Prisco predicts that the Chiefs will select Clemson Tigers cornerback Avieon Terrell in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

"They have to get corner help with both Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson now with the Rams," Prisco wrote. "Terrell said he modeled his game after McDuffie, so it would fit."

Terrell’s fit in Kansas City would be about quickly stabilizing a secondary that lost two key contributors in a short span. His familiarity with McDuffie’s play style makes the transition even more intriguing, as he could step into a similar role with a skill set already tailored to that type of responsibility. His instincts, quickness, and ability to mirror receivers would give the Chiefs a much-needed presence on the outside.

What stands out most is how naturally he could slide into the system. Instead of forcing a complete schematic adjustment, Kansas City could plug in Terrell and maintain continuity in how they defend opposing passing attacks. That kind of seamless fit is critical for a team trying to rebound from a disappointing season.

Long term, Terrell wouldn’t just replace lost talent; he could help redefine the identity of the secondary. If he develops as expected, the Chiefs could turn a major offseason loss into an opportunity to reset with a younger, high-upside cornerstone at cornerback.
