The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 2026 offseason facing difficult questions after a disappointing 6-11 finish in 2025 that left them outside the playoff picture. Defensive inconsistency, injuries and an uneven supporting cast around quarterback Patrick Mahomes contributed to one of the franchise’s most challenging seasons in recent memory. With expectations reset, the front office began reshaping the roster while attempting to balance short-term competitiveness with long-term flexibility.
Kansas City moved quickly to create cap space, restructuring Mahomes’ contract and adjusting other veteran deals to provide financial breathing room.
Part of that evaluation led to persistent offseason rumors about All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, who had been a cornerstone of Kansas City’s secondary since being selected 21st overall in the 2022 NFL Draft.

On Wednesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Kansas City agreed to a blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams will receive McDuffie, while the Chiefs will acquire the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, along with a fifth-round pick, a sixth-round selection and a 2027 third-round pick.
McDuffie earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2023 and Second-Team All-Pro in 2024, establishing himself as one of the league’s elite defenders early in his career. During the 2025 season, he started 13 games, recording 63 tackles, seven pass deflections and one interception, though his year was cut short by a knee injury that placed him on injured reserve.
While moving an All-Pro talent is a huge deal, the move signals that Kansas City is prioritizing long-term roster construction after its 2025 setback. Additional contract adjustments and personnel decisions are expected in the coming weeks as the Chiefs continue shaping the next phase of their roster build.
