Most NFL general managers will spend the spring concealing their NFL Draft plans. Brett Veach instead has to field questions about a celebrity wedding.
ESPN’s Peter Schrager veered away from free-agent and draft chatter when asking Veach if he received an invitation to Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift's wedding. The Chiefs GM wasn't eager to engage in the conversation.
"Um, we'll see," Veach replied. "Couldn't say either way."
Schrager made the moment more awkward by noting the tension. Veach joked that he'd rather reveal who Kansas City is drafting with the No. 9 pick on April 23.
"Is that like, no one's even allowed to talk about whether -- is it pretty secure?" Schrager asked. "OK, I can see the uncomfort. The room just got really tight."
"That's like the hardest-hitting question you’ll ever ask me," Veach said with a laugh. "Off the record, you can ask me who we’re picking (at) nine. I'm gonna tell you who we’re picking (at) nine. I cannot disclose anything about the wedding."

Schrager reflected on the exchange after the interview, speculating that Veach was advised not to share any details about the wedding.
"I don't want you to accuse me of trying to fish for like a TMZ headline," Schrager said at the end of his podcast. "But the way that Brett Veach responded to me asking about whether he was invited to Travis and Taylor’s wedding, it was like if I asked him for a government secret. Gosh, he clammed up. Tells me there’s been some strict orders, yay or nay, whether he is invited or not, do not speak on the wedding."
Or maybe Veach just felt bad about not receiving an invitation. Either way, he seemed much more comfortable discussing Kelce's return to Kansas City.
While Veach had some doubt during the season about Kelce potentially retiring, the 36-year-old made it clear to him and head coach Andy Reid that he didn't want his career to end on a 6-11 season.
"Travis basically said, I'm not going out like this. Let's stay in touch," Veach recalled. "And he said the same thing to the coach as well."
Veach gave Kelce space to make up his mind, but he believed the tight end would return for his 14th season with the Chiefs.
"I think once he left the facility after those exit interviews, I think there was a sense of, he's coming back," Veach said. "Let's just let him do what he needs to do, and that's kind of how it worked out."
