Mansoor Delane didn't need time to settle into the moment. Minutes after the Kansas City Chiefs called his name in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the LSU cornerback made it clear he wanted to be exactly where he landed.
"There's no better opportunity. We have a championship team. We had one little down year. I'm ready to go," Delane said, per ESPN's Nate Taylor.
Kansas City moved up to get him, trading with the Cleveland Browns to acquire the No. 6 overall pick. Cleveland walked away with picks 9, 74 and 148 in the deal. The Chiefs used that sixth selection on Delane, and the reasoning wasn't hard to follow.
The team had already traded Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams and then lost Jaylen Watson to the same team in free agency. Two starting cornerbacks gone, one pick used to start solving that problem.

When asked why Kansas City felt like the right fit, Delane pointed beyond just the organization.
"Coach Spags. Everything, the culture. It's a winning program. You know what's on the other side of the ball," he added, the last part a potential nod to Patrick Mahomes.
On the field, Delane brings a specific skill set that fits what the Chiefs need. He plays tight, stays on his assignment and makes it difficult for receivers to create space. His recovery speed is just as valuable as his ability to stay sticky in coverage.
When someone does get a step on him, he closes fast. The combination of burst and agility is what allows him to hold up consistently at a high level.
The production backs it up across every stop he made. At Virginia Tech in 2022, he led the team with eight pass breakups and earned Honorable Mention All-ACC recognition while recording 38 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, an interception and two forced fumbles.
He started all 13 games the following season, finishing with 54 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception and a pass breakup. In 2024, he led Virginia Tech again with four interceptions across 12 starts, adding 54 tackles, seven pass breakups and two forced fumbles on his way to third-team All-ACC.
His move to LSU in 2025 took things further. Delane earned First-team AP All-American and All-SEC honors, was a Jim Thorpe Award finalist and led the Tigers with 11 pass breakups across 11 starts.
Kansas City found its answer at cornerback. Delane looks ready to prove it was the right call.
