Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs have already made changes to both their squad and the coaching staff during the NFL offseason. However, there’s no denying that their biggest move yet is trading All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams.

News on the McDuffie blockbuster deal emerged on Wednesday. The Chiefs decided to part ways with the 25-year-old, who won two Super Bowls in Kansas City since joining the team in 2022.

In exchange for McDuffie, the Chiefs received four future draft picks. This includes a 2026 first-round pick, a 2026 fifth-round pick, a 2026 sixth-round pick and a 2027 third-round pick.

The Chiefs amassed quite a haul in the deal. They did not get any players in return, but Kansas City secured a lot of draft capital that they can immediately use to revamp the roster.

Nevertheless, players on the squad have expressed disappointment with the team’s decision to ship McDuffie off. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared his reaction with a one-word post on X: “Damn.”

Other players such as Jaylen Watson, Xavier Worthy and Charles Omenihu had a similar reaction to Mahomes.

A new report from ESPN has revealed Reid’s reaction to the trade. The Chiefs coach reportedly shares his players' sentiments. According to ESPN’s source, Reid “felt similar to those players about trading McDuffie.”

The report further indicates that prior to the trade, Reid and general manager Brett Veach “knew the Chiefs still had plenty of other positions on the roster they needed to address this offseason.” On top of that, the team also felt the need to acquire additional draft assets.

All these factors led to the difficult decision to part ways with McDuffie, who is widely considered one of the best defensive players on the roster.

Reid is a pragmatic leader who is well aware of the fact that sacrifices need to be made for the betterment of the team. Nevertheless, the 67-year-old cannot help but feel disappointed about losing a stud like McDuffie.
