Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are close to starting the 2026 NFL regular season. Kansas City will host the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium, looking to rebound after a disappointing 2025 season in which they finished 6-11.
Mahomes ended the 2025 season early due to a torn ACL sustained against the Los Angeles Chargers in a 16-13 loss in Week 15. The two-time NFL MVP underwent successful surgery the very next day by the Dallas Cowboys’ official team physician, Dr. Dan Cooper. Despite the record, the Chiefs have high hopes with returning stars such as tight end Travis Kelce and defensive lineman Chris Jones, as well as the No. 6 overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, Mansoor Delane.

The 6-foot-2 quarterback finished the year with 3,587 passing yards on a 62.7% completion percentage to go along with 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. For his career, the three-time Super Bowl champion has thrown for 35,939 yards and 267 touchdowns on a 66.2% completion percentage.
On Tuesday, NBC anchor and reporter McKenzie Nelson went to the social media website X to report on the status of Mahomes for the game against the Denver Broncos. It appears that head coach Andy Reid has declared Mahomes available for the 2026 season opener, although with the caveat that there is not a setback.
“Chiefs: Head coach Andy Reid says Patrick Mahomes will start Week 1 against the Broncos unless there’s a setback this week.”
Kansas City will host Denver at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday, Sept. 14, at 8:15 p.m. ET, with coverage on ESPN’s Monday Night Football.
