Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs are using the preseason to evaluate their roster before the regular season begins. With roster cuts approaching, Saturday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was meant to provide another opportunity for players to strengthen their cases and for the coaching staff to assess the team’s depth.
The Chiefs are coming off a 20-12 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams and are continuing to sort through several position battles. Kansas City will need to trim its roster to 53 players by Aug. 30, making each remaining preseason evaluation important.
With one preseason game left after Saturday, Reid was dealt another injury setback.

Just before Saturday’s kickoff in Tampa Bay, the Chiefs announced that safety Alohi Gilman has been ruled out against the Buccaneers. While it’s unclear what the severity of the injury is, the development removes a veteran presence from an important position as Reid evaluates his defense.
Gilman, 28, enters his first season with Kansas City after signing with the Chiefs in March. The Notre Dame product was originally selected by the Los Angeles Chargers in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
He spent the first five seasons of his career with the Chargers before splitting the 2025 season between Los Angeles and Baltimore. Gilman appeared in 17 games last season, finishing with 90 tackles, nine passes defensed, one forced fumble and one defensive touchdown.
Gilman has 85 career games and 290 total tackles, along with five interceptions, 27 passes defensed and five forced fumbles.
His absence against Tampa Bay gives other safeties another opportunity to make an impression as Kansas City continues evaluating its roster ahead of the regular season.
