Chicago Fire fans were finally able to see the long-awaited debut of Robert Lewandowski in a blockbuster MLS matchup against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field. However, due to weather issues, the match has been postponed to October 6.
The match also has an extra layer of interest because Lewandowski may be up against former Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Müller, who recently joined Vancouver.
But the biggest question is still yet to be answered: Will Lewandowski start?
Is Robert Lewandowski Playing Tonight?
Lewandowski was expected to be available for selection. Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter has been mindful not to rush his marquee signing, particularly after the striker's recent arrival in Chicago. Unfortunately, his debut will have to be postponed to a later date.
The Windy City is also missing a few regulars because of injuries and player management after the World Cup, and Vancouver is keeping a close eye on a few absences as players come back from international service.
Sebastian Berhalter, for instance, is in mandatory post-World Cup rest, and the Whitecaps will have to be careful with their minutes.
Chicago Fire vs. Vancouver Whitecaps Postponed
Smoke from the current Canadian wildfires spread into the Midwest, resulting in air quality conditions that were considered unsafe for players, staff, and fans. Due to the conditions throughout the day, MLS decided to postpone the match, putting the health and safety of all involved first.
The delay meant that what was supposed to be one of the biggest nights of the MLS season was pushed back. Thousands of fans had gathered at Soldier Field to see Lewandowski's first game for Chicago Fire, and the match was also expected to be a reunion with former Bayern Munich teammate Thomas Müller.
Lewandowski's first appearance will then have to wait a bit longer as Chicago Fire hope the Polish striker will be able to make his debut at a later date.
