Quarterback Justin Herbert is going into his seventh year with the Los Angeles Chargers. Since being taken with the No. 6 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, he's established himself as a franchise starter for the team.
While the former Oregon Duck doesn't have a long history of injuries, it's always important to find the best backup available. Last season, that was Trey Lance, who appeared in four games and made one start. He threw for 226 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception.
With offseason workouts ramping up, the Chargers are keeping their options open. ESPN's Kris Rhim reports that former Florida State Seminoles quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has stood out during the team's practices.

"With Justin Herbert throwing little this offseason while focusing on footwork and mechanics, Uiagalelei has taken advantage of his reps," Rhim wrote. "The former undrafted free agent has been one of the Chargers' most impressive players, thriving on intermediate and deep throws. If that carries into training camp, Uiagalelei could challenge Trey Lance for the backup job. "
Before beginning his collegiate career, Uiagalelei was one of the nation's most sought-after recruits. As a member of the 2020 cycle, Rivals listed him as a five-star prospect and the No. 1 quarterback.
Beginning his career with the Clemson Tigers, though, he didn't live up to expectations. After stints with the Tigers (2020 to 2022), Oregon State Beavers (2023) and Seminoles (2024), he threw for 9,384 yards, 61 touchdowns and 30 interceptions.

After his final season in college, Uiagalelei signed with the Los Angeles Chargers as an undrafted free agent after the 2025 NFL Draft. He did not record any statistics as a rookie and spent the majority of the year on the practice squad.
However, now under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, the former five-star recruit is beginning to catch some attention. With training camp set to begin in late July, Uiagalelei has the opportunity to win a spot on the 53-man roster.
