The Boston Celtics have no shortage of recognizable names entering the 2026-27 NBA season, but one of the team’s most interesting relationships might involve two guards at very different stages of their careers.

Veteran Mike Conley arrived in Boston with years of NBA experience and a reputation for being one of basketball’s most respected teammates. Payton Pritchard, meanwhile, has established himself as an important part of the Celtics’ future.

Their relationship has quickly become something worth watching.

During Boston’s preseason preparations, Conley revealed that Pritchard has been asking him questions about everything from controlling the pace of a game to becoming a better playmaker.

The conversations have even continued away from the basketball court, including during a team dinner when the players were supposed to be relaxing and watching football.

For Conley, the experience has been a reminder of why he enjoys helping younger players develop.

A Celtics Team Dinner Turned Into Something More

Speaking with CelticsBlog’s Noa Dalzell, Conley described how Pritchard began asking him basketball questions during a team dinner in Charleston.

Rather than simply enjoying the evening, Pritchard wanted to know how Conley approached different stages of his career and what adjustments helped him become a more effective point guard.

The questions included whether Pritchard should slow down his pace and when Conley believed he had reached his best form as a player. It was an unusual glimpse into the mind of a guard who has already accomplished plenty but continues searching for ways to improve.

Conley appeared to appreciate the curiosity. He has spent much of his professional career developing a reputation for leadership, patience and making the players around him better. That willingness to share knowledge could become particularly valuable for a Celtics team attempting to build chemistry entering another demanding season.

Conley’s Childhood Story Explains His Approach

Perhaps the most revealing part of Conley’s interview involved a memory from elementary school. Even as a young basketball player, Conley recalled being more interested in making sure his teammates enjoyed themselves than dominating every possession.

He explained that he wanted everyone to have opportunities to participate, even when he believed he could score whenever he wanted. That philosophy has followed him into the NBA.

Conley became a first-time All-Star in 2021, well into his professional career, demonstrating that players can continue improving long after reaching the league. Now, he has an opportunity to pass some of those lessons along to Pritchard.

For Boston fans, the relationship provides an encouraging reminder that building a championship contender involves more than collecting talented players.

Sometimes, the most meaningful development begins with a veteran answering questions over dinner. And judging by Pritchard’s curiosity, those conversations are unlikely to stop anytime soon.
