Although it’s only Week 7 of the NFL season, CBS has committed to J.J. Watt as the network’s full-time color commentator.
Watt was named Tony Romo’s replacement prior to Week 1, but fans weren’t sure he’d remain Jim Nantz’s broadcast partner for the 2027 season and beyond. Speculation surrounding Watt’s job truly ramped up once it was revealed that Troy Aikman is set to be a free agent in the offseason.
On Thursday, however, CBS announced that Watt has been signed to a new multi-year contract. He’ll be the network’s lead analyst for years to come.
“I am incredibly honored and grateful to have the opportunity to represent CBS Sports and all of the fantastic people who make this place so special,” said Watt. “From the brotherhood of THE NFL TODAY to my crews calling games, I couldn’t ask for better teammates alongside me on this television journey. I am thankful to David Berson for his leadership, vision and trust. I love this job and can’t wait to see ya Sunday with Jim and Tracy and many more Sundays to come!”
Watt will call this Sunday’s AFC North battle between the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens

What’s next for Tony Romo?
CBS parted ways with Romo a few months after he was charged with unsafe passing on the right, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and possessing open intoxicants.
During an appearance on Jimmy Traina’s podcast, Nantz said he expects Romo to land another TV gig.
“I think unquestionably he will work again,” Nantz said, via Awful Announcing. “I don’t know if it’s calling games or being in studio, but he’s got a lot of talent. He’s got a lot of people who like him, and he’s a star. He’s got a personality that’s different, and that’s a good thing. …And I don’t know where Tony’s head is on that right now, so I’m not going to speculate, but I think you’re asking me ‘will he ever work again in the business?’ I think there will be plenty of opportunity for that, because he’s got game.”
For now, Romo is a free agent in the sports media industry.
