Carson Schwesinger and the Cleveland Browns’ defense spent three quarters keeping the Baltimore Ravens off the scoreboard Sunday, and Andre Szmyt finished it with a 37-yard field goal on the final play.
Cleveland won 13-10 at Huntington Bank Field to improve to 4-2, just one week after a single bad snap cost the Browns a comeback against the Jets.
It wasn’t pretty.
Deshaun Watson was sacked five times, and the Browns didn’t score until the third quarter. But Baltimore, playing again without Lamar Jackson, according to KSL, didn’t score after the first quarter.
Here’s who came out ahead, and who didn’t.
Winners
Carson Schwesinger
Schwesinger led everyone on the field with 13 tackles, and he made the play that turned the game. Early in the fourth quarter, with Baltimore leading 10-3, he punched the ball out of Derrick Henry’s arms, and Tyson Campbell recovered at the Ravens’ 35-yard line. Seven plays later, Audric Estime scored from 2 yards out to tie it. Henry finished with 58 yards on 17 carries, and the Ravens managed 87 rushing yards as a team. It was another strong day for a defense that has played well without Myles Garrett, and Schwesinger’s mark on the game was the biggest.
Jerry Jeudy
Jeudy caught all four of his targets for 69 yards, and his biggest one helped clinch the win. With 42 seconds left and the ball at the Cleveland 38-yard line, Watson found him over the middle for 33 yards to the Baltimore 29-yard line, setting up the winning kick. He also picked up 13 yards on a third-down catch on the drive before. With rookie Denzel Boston adding a surprising dimension to the offense this season, Jeudy picked a good time to remind everyone he’s still the guy Watson trusts downfield in the biggest moments.
Andre Szmyt
Szmyt’s day had a scare in it. He made a 48-yarder in the third quarter, then missed a 48-yard try wide left with 3:44 left and the score tied. With 2 seconds left, his 42-yard attempt was blocked by Keyon Martin, but Martin was flagged for being offside. Szmyt got another chance from 37 yards and hit it as time expired. He finished 2-of-3 on field goals, and the Browns will take that version of his day every time.
Losers
Audric Estime
Estime scored the tying touchdown, but he rushed nine times for 19 yards at just 2.1 per carry. With Quinshon Judkins out due to an ankle injury, the Browns signed Estime off the Vikings’ practice squad last week, and Cleveland’s run game finished with 93 yards on 29 carries. The Browns’ rushing attack problems were the story a week ago, and Sunday didn’t change that narrative.
Denzel Boston
Boston came into the week as one of the league’s top offensive rookies, leading the Browns in catches, yards, and touchdowns. Watson targeted him five times Sunday, and he finished with one catch for 15 yards. Two deep shots to him in the final five minutes fell incomplete, and Cleveland’s passing game ran through Jeudy and KC Concepcion instead.
