Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young (knee) has kept the offense afloat through three weeks, but Sunday night could demand another escape act. Young has faced an NFL-high 62 pressures, and left guard Damien Lewis (elbow) will miss the Detroit Lions matchup in Week 4 as the Panthers try to protect a passer who led the league through three weeks with 939 yards passing.
Locked On Panthers host Julian Council made protection his first key to a Carolina upset, and the urgency is clear. Young was pressured on more than half his dropbacks against the Cleveland Browns last week, according to the team, yet still threw for 291 yards. He has absorbed pressure without turning it into sacks at the same rate as many other heavily pressured quarterbacks, but that is not a formula the Panthers can rely on long-term.
Detroit brings a more dangerous front than the one Young saw in Cleveland. Edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson entered the week with 21 pressures, while defensive tackle Alim McNeill gives the Lions an interior threat against an offensive line that will again be reshuffled. Corey Bullock is in line for his first NFL start at left guard in Lewis’ place, and right tackle Monroe Freeling (concussion) is questionable but did practice in full on Friday.
Carolina will be without wide receiver Xavier Legette (knee), and wideout Jalen Coker (quadriceps) is questionable after being limited in practice Thursday and Friday. That puts more responsibility on Young to manage the game before the snap, identify pressure looks and find available targets quickly if Detroit tries to attack the inexperienced interior of the line.
Council’s larger point was that Young has already surpassed the low-volume label attached to him entering the season. The quarterback has carried an offense that ranks near the bottom of the league in several rushing stats, and the Panthers need him to continue creating while asking less of him. A cleaner pocket, not another scramble-heavy showcase, would give Carolina its best chance to stay in the game under the “Sunday Night Football” spotlight.
Panthers News and Notes
– Running back Chuba Hubbard could have a needed opening against a Detroit defense that ranks 28th in defensive rushing success rate and last in explosive-rush percentage allowed. Council pointed to Carolina’s second-half improvement in Cleveland, when the offense produced 80 yards on 13 carries, as a potential blueprint.
– Wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan needs a larger response after catching two passes for 17 yards against Cleveland, Council said. Brycen Tremayne and John Metchie III provided timely production in that game, and their roles could grow again with Legette out and Coker possibly sidelined.
– Cornerbacks Jaycee Horn (quad) and Mike Jackson (groin) are on injured reserve, leaving Will Lee III and Akayleb Evans in line for expanded roles against Detroit. The secondary changes raise the stakes against a high-powered Lions passing attack.
