Brazil continued its preparations for the 2026 World Cup with a high-profile friendly against France, a match that drew attention not only for the talent on the pitch, but also for those left off of it.
The five-time World Cup champions are navigating an ongoing debate surrounding Neymar’s status with the national team.
The Santos forward has not featured for Brazil since October 2023 and was left out of the latest squad for the March friendlies due to fitness concerns.
Neymar's absence has remained a central topic in the build-up to the summer tournament as the final roster decision approaches, with Brazil's coach Carlo Ancelotti set to announce his squad on May 18.
During the match against France at Gillette Stadium, a predominantly Brazilian crowd made its stance on Neymar clear. As France scored its second goal in a 2-1 win, fans began chanting Neymar’s name, signaling support for his return to the squad for the World Cup.
Ancelotti was asked about those chants following the loss, but chose not to engage directly with the topic.
“We should be talking about those who were here, who played, who gave their all, who stepped up, and who worked hard. I am satisfied,” Ancelotti said.
The Brazil coach reiterated that competition for places remains high up front as he evaluates options before naming his final squad in a bit over a month.
“There is a lot of competition,” Ancelotti said.
Ancelotti has previously stated that Neymar remains in contention for the World Cup if he can return to full fitness, emphasizing that his March squad was comprised entirely of fully-fit players.
“Neymar can be at the World Cup. If he can reach the next World Cup at 100 percent, he can be at the World Cup,” Ancelotti said. “Why is he not on this list now? Because he is not 100%. We need players at 100% right now.”
The discussion has extended beyond Brazil, with Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. both voicing support for Neymar’s presence at the tournament.
Brazil will face Croatia next on Tuesday in the final match before Ancelotti announces the final World Cup squad.
