Canada coach Jon Cooper took some heat for his comments on the loss to the United States on Sunday morning.
The Americans topped the Canadians, 2-1, in overtime. Jack Hughes scored the game-winning goal. Following the game, Cooper spoke out about the 3-on-3 overtime rules.
"You take four players off the ice, now hockey’s not hockey anymore. There’s a reason overtime and shootouts are in play — it’s all TV-driven to end games, so it’s not a long time. There’s a reason why it's not in the Stanley Cup final or playoffs," Cooper said on Sunday morning.
Cooper took some heat for the comment.
"I love Cooper, but my God you lost with McDavid, MacKinnon and Makar on the ice," one fan wrote.
"Both teams had to play by the same rules. Skill level tilted ridiculously towards Canada. BTW, and speaking of taking players off the ice--Not only did Canada not score when it was an even 3-on-3, they didn't score when it was 5-on-3. Maybe it's not the format," one fan added.
"Let me see what you posted about 3v3 after Marner hit the game winner vs Czechia," one fan added.
But while Cooper complained about the overtime rules, he is getting praised for congratulating U.S. players on their win.
Cooper pulls classy move immediately after loss
Cooper congratulated one of the U.S. players, Jake Guentzel, on winning the gold medal before he left the ice.
"Another classy move," one reporter shared.
Cooper's team might have suffered a tough loss on Sunday, but he still managed to show some good sportsmanship on the way out.
